I still have my one kilo kook. I bought it from Mike after experiencing the kook spinning at Ft. Cobb. I think I paid about $210. Ack!

Mike is also responsible for introducing me and Kiwi to Dave Hakes. I'm still working at his shop and his wife is still a quarter owner. (Dave passed a few years ago) :(

OK... now that people keep leaving us, I had to go back and look at some photos. This is out at Fort Cobb in 2004. Some of these folks are gone now. Others I haven't heard about in a long time. I have some photos from 2002 and 2006 as well.

What a crazy week in the store! I'm only there three days a week in the afternoon. I came in on Thursday afternoon and there was product everywhere. Lots got packed up and mailed out to wholesalers. The spread between bid and ask is crazy. At least one of the wholesalers stopped buying. The price difference on a 100oz silver bar was quite a bit different between mid afternoon and end of day. Another nearby store didn't clue in and was paying more than what they can get from the wholesaler.  Interesting times...

Welp... just sold my pm stocks that I bought mostly in the early 2000s. Some of them withered away and died, but others hadn't gotten there yet.  One of the only good ones was Bema, which became Kinross. Fun times...

Nice to see this all explained...

It's so frustrating having all this "net zero" crap pushed on us when it's not gonna help anything.

So sad...  A friend of ours (me and Kiwi) passed away suddenly two weeks ago. He was only 69. I found out yesterday. Peter was a great outdoorsman and died probably of some form of Morel poisoning. His wife wrote:

There is no easy way to say this, but Peter passed away totally unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Thursday, April 13, 2023 while on a canoe trip on the Green River in Utah.  Our hypothesis, pending autopsy results that will take 8-12 weeks, is that it was morel mushroom poisoning.  There were two retired MDs on the trip who cared for Peter through the night, and we have all done much research on morel mushrooms in the days since.  Here are some important things to know if you forage for morels, much of which is information disseminated after 2018 when Peter first started foraging after doing his own extensive research:  1)  the water from reconstituting the morels should not be used, 2) the morels should be boiled for at least 10 minutes, 3) the morels should always be cut in half before using, so that the completely hollow stem can be verified, 4) the true morel also has a toxin that can build up in the body over time, so morels should be consumed in moderation, and 5) a person can develop a sensitivity to morels and can have a bad reaction or fatal event even after having consumed them without any issues for years.  Please take a moment to Google the "early morel," which is the false morel closest in appearance to the real morel.  It also has a hollow stem, although there are sometimes white fibers in the stem, and the stem is attached almost unnoticeably near the top of the mushroom cap, unlike the true morel.  False morels have a deadly toxin that typically takes 6 hours for onset, but based on Peter's reaction time of an hour or so to the dinner he prepared, it is likely that the cause was one or more of the 5 points listed above. We are heartbroken and don't want this to happen to anyone else.

On top of that, our 15 yo cat was diagnosed with stage three kidney failure.

It's been a tough week.

Happy Father's Day!

For those that knew him, the memorial for David Hakes was today and was very nice. I got to meet the kids, all the grand and great-grand kids, too. Got to hear lots of memories of him.

Here's a pic of the original shop in Missoula from the 1970s.

I found it...

Jonna Frost is at Frosty's Acre  - October 9, 2020  · Haigler, NE  ·

No. These are not pickled eggs. These are homegrown, unwashed eggs stored in lime water. The lime water fills in all the pores of the egg and encases them in a shell of "glass".  Water glassed eggs can last stored at room temperature like this for up to 2 years. This method of preserving raw eggs has been used since the 1800s and was common even into the 1940s and 50s.  When refrigerators became a standard kitchen appliance, water glassing almost became a lost art.

You cannot use commercial eggs for this because they have all had the protective coating (bloom) washed off the shell and will quickly go bad.  I recently scrambled up 18 eggs that had been stored in lime water for 7 months on an unrefrigerated cupboard shelf and they tasted perfectly fresh (although the yoke seemed a bit thinner than fresh eggs).

Anyhow, if you have an abundance of fresh, unwashed eggs, you might want to try putting some away for later.  The ratio is one ounce (by weight) of lime (calcium hydroxide) to one quart of water.  Calcium hydroxide is a completely natural, organic ingredient and harmless, although the powder is very fine and may irritate your lungs if you breathe it in.  The lime water also quickly  dried out the skin on my hands and I had to apply lotion to get them back to normal.  When you do use the eggs, be sure to rinse them thoroughly before you crack them or they will taste like lime.

FYI:  a gallon size container will store about 40 eggs.  Lime is also known as calcium hydroxide. You can buy it in 50 pound bags in the masonry section of the hardware store, or in 1 pound bags in the canning section of the grocery store....often labeled as "pickling lime".

I've got neighbors with chickens. Maybe I should get my own. I have an egg preservation method somewhere. I will post it as soon as I find it.

So I'm sitting at home with MadKiwi, who tested positive, yet I tested negative. I'm boosting my immune system and snorting iodine. It seems to be working. Local shops are all out of test kits.

Saw someone at the local assisted living on the 18th. By the 24th they were back to a no visitors policy due to a "respiratory virus" outbreak. It's not COVID...

Madkiwi posted:
Government- YOU'RE GOING TO SUFFER AND DIE FROM COVID THIS WINTER!
Americans- I just got Covid. What should I do?
Government- Go home, take Tylenol and hydrate. If you get worse go to the ER.
Americans- Well what about Paxlovid? Monoclonal antibodies?
Government- We didn't order enough so they are being rationed.
Americans- Well, give me something! I don't want to die! How about Ivermectin? Hydroxychloroquine?
Government- No.
I'm living that reality right now. Diagnosed last Thursday. Scratchy throat, tired, headaches, stuffy sinuses. Not bad, but initially freaking out because there no guidance beyond "hydrate and Tylenol". But if you believe the MSM we're all gonna die.
I'm feeling much better now, but Christmas is postponed for a week. I'm exceedingly annoyed at the absolute mess the government is making of this- beyond the societal and economic damage.
"I want more government control over my healthcare" said no rational adult ever.
I'm not looking forward to Medicare.

Silverfox #2855 - The shop I work in still has plenty of silver. So does MadKiwi. What state are you in? I can think of some shops that don't have supply for other reasons. Of course the 90% is getting more demand and the premiums have gone up. I'm sure others here can speak to that better than I can.

I see some more people I remember. :-)

Knapper: Interested to hear more about your study with Univ. of MO.

Madkiwi just got diagnosed with the 'rona. We'll see how my immune system holds up. Christmas is postponed until 2022.

Edit: Found TYoung in Pyrite's pics.  And I forgot IDT. I think he was in Idaho, last I heard.

Howdy Ft. Cobbers. I see some of you all that I remember. Yes, RACK, Kiwi and I are doing fine. My brain tried to kill me ten years ago, but I'm still kicking. I gather many of you have had your own adventures. As NW said before, I was lurking around on the quicktopic group. I don't visit a lot, but I see some of you that I remember from (ACK!) 20 years ago. Pyrite, Erle, Rack... mentions of Earl. Aurator.  Kiwi talked to Ross about five years ago and I guess he came into the shop a couple of times when I wasn't there. I wonder about some of the others: AuDude, the guy from Maine whose handle escapes me, the guy that escaped from Czechoslovakia. If I could only find some of the pictures with captions and names...

I still have most of the mining stocks I bought way back when. They're just sitting in my IRAs... I probably should have paid more attention and sold them. Since I'm working in a coin shop, it's been kind of interesting to meet different people. All sorts. I know some of you have a bunch of stories from your ventures.

Anyway, keep on keeping on.

#1830  Hi everyone! Yeah, I saw a kilo Kookabura in the store and I started wondering how all the Montanafest/Ft. Cobb folks have been. Thanks Norwester (Mike). Does anyone know what happened to John Cobb?
