42393....wooly...is it O.K. with you that a few of us have been paying close attention the past few months?  Our daughter hooked us up with a local cattle producer and we took a 1/2 and they took a 1/2 of beef some 3-4 months ago.....gotta good deal on a straight-thru wrapped and packed price of $2.85/lb....You can't touch hamburger now for under $6.00....I pulled out four nice ribeyes for Labor Day as my brother in law & wife will be staying with us for a few days...BUT, I'll raise a toast  to wolavaka after saying grace...feel
better, now?

43229.....I hear ya, wolavka....When we moved away with the dust and wasteful spending of King County in our rear view mirrors, it was a relief to escape the  subsidation of the growing homeless class who were out spraying their "tags" along the I-5 Freeway overpasses...I'm not pleased with aiding those who lived on our taxpayer dollars and showed no desire to try to rejoin the employment rolls...Annual taxes on our $800K valued home had climbed to near $7800 or some 10% per the appraisal....We got lucky and bought a home up here near the Kanajian border that, IF it were in King Co. would have listed for over a million and not the $600K we paid...best of all, our property taxes for 2015 here were $3700. a year....We recently got a new appraisal valuation that will put next year's taxes right back up into that $7500./year level....I keep looking around and wondering "Whatinhell have they been spending the taxpayer's dollars on?  Where are the infrastructure re-do's or highway improvements, and, why is my water bill now $250"...Yeah, YOU were right...we're all fecked!

42281....well, wolly lafka, SHOW ME when/where I downplayed aluminum and copper. por favor....IF I did as such, I'll accept my errors, but I doubt that was coming from me....I don't know squat about aluminium usage, but I've always had respect for Dr.Copper....why,  I've still got 180-200 lbs. of sheet copper and lawd-nose how many bits and pieces of tube stuff out in my garage, having sold off 800 lbs of stuff before we moved up here 11+ years ago....I'm waiting for one of those wilda*s moonshots as a selling opportunity....someday day soon maybe?

This posting system is so "Fecked!"  The post that was attached with that last photo was explaining how very special our local Dungeness Crab is -- it's superceeded lobster and King Crab in my opinion...pair it with a very favorable Rhone Burgandy like this Chateauneuf  du Pape and some herbed Focassia bread and it completes another very tense week in the metals!

Hangovers, Cherokee?...yeah, I prolly had a few, but none as bad as the evening I engulfed probably six or seven Tequila Almendrados in Jimmy's Subterranean Bar in Juarez, Mexico...of course, there may have been a coupla Blackberry Brandy Fizzes slipped in there as touted by the guy who lead me into the place (below street level, almost like a giant tomb)....Took me three full days to really recover from that night! Whew!  I have no idea how I staggered out of there just as the sun was coming up...

Being in the coin business for nearly 45 years, too, I've been fortunate to have enjoyed some of the finer restaurants around this whirld (sorry, wolavka, never made it to the White Rabbit)...the Palm in NYC,  the 95th in Chicago, Top of the Mark in San Fran, Shula's in Miami and Tucson, half-a-dozen in Texas and Colorado and. of course, Vegas, along with local favorites in Tokyo and Hong Kong and Munich....some great memories of wonderful dining, many accompanied by that Chateau beverage....I daresay your travels probably outdid mine, but all in all those places and memories will suffice as I head toward the final hurdle in the days ahead....hopefully, not too soon!

ROAN....I'm not surprised that it's achieved that status...My old friend and customer, Jack, was pretty picky on what he liked to eat or drink...He and his wife treated me to a fantastic steak and seafood dinner in a rather obscure and underrated small restaurant one night where we somehow finished off two bottles of that lovely wine and staggered home feeling wonderful after sharing a couple of grand deserts...

WINES?....Some 45+ years ago a good ol' boy customer stopped in to chat (he was mostly a Copper trader) and handed me a Rhone Valley Cabernet, which I found out was running $70.+ a bottle in those days, but was a wonderfully deep and fruity taste nicer than anything I'd tried -- I loved it, but at the price then, my income stream allowed for a bottle every 3 months or so....Well, kapex informed me recently that COSTCO of all places has this wonderful beverage, Chateauneuf du 'Pape, offered at $19.95?! What? ...must be some knock-off or clone I figured, but I gave it a try....wow!  It was like stepping back in time 45+ years as the taste, the smell, the smoothness as it slid down one's throat were identical to that long-before-version...I bought 6 bottles on my next visit....thankew, kapex for the head's up! ;D

https://costcowineblog.com/2023-kirkland-signature-chateauneuf-du-pape/

IF you're a fan of Rhone Burgandy give this a try....

41485....heh-heh, well, RACK, the only pain I've experienced was my lower back due to spending a fitful night in one of those damnable hospital beds that have moveable mattress rollers that supposedly help by keeping the patient in changing positions, increasing the circulation, etc.  The bed I was in felt like there was no padding 'tween those roller things and the thin mattress I was trying to sleep on....so, instead of being of any help to me, it left me with a
sore lower back and hip areas....But. NO, no pain as such related directly to the surgical spots....and, NO, I was not prescribed any kind of pain medicines which I don't want to take anyway esp. oxy and related drugs.

That shingle replacement 'chine is purty neat, bufford, BUT, there's still got to be a fair amount of human involvement before it ever lays down a slab of shingles...underboards and plywood sheathing have to be checked for quality and rolled (edge to edge) tarpaper in place before anything can go forward....yeah, they might save the actual shingle by shingle part, but won't cut down on  a lot of human labor...besides we'll miss the "thump! thump! thumping" of those Messicans with nail guns.....

40803....$4500. for a water heater install?!?!  Man, there's definitely a bunch of dumbsh*ts if they paid that kind of price....We had one installed maybe 10 years ago in Issaquah -- cost incl. labor was $875.  Now, tell me there's justification for a 5X increase in price in that time period....I put one in when I lived in a cabin over at Lake Quinault -- other than making sure the power was off before disconnecting the old one (and draining off any remaining water, too), it was no big deal....Are these homeowners really that dumb as to pay that kind of price nowadays?  The stickler in all of this are the city and municipality CODES that seem to insist on specific tanks, etc. which, no doubt, kicks the costs up significantly........

Small flash floods were pretty common when I lived in the Austin area...a normally calm creek about a half mile south of our duplex decided to show it's power over one stretch with 2 days of heavy rain...that little creek moved up toward our housing development to within 100' or so of our plat there in a matter of 40 or so hours...We almost got caught in one of the low-water crossings up in the hill country on one other outing...our old VW bug started sliding downstream as we were crossing thru but I gunned it and we somehow jumped out and up to the main crude roadway we'd come in on only hours earlier.....

Sounds like a war zone outside tonight...whew!  With a rather large local population of Hispanic field workers who work the large berry farms and dozen or so dairies living here, they relish these opportunities to spend some of their wages on Chinese "fuegos artificiales".....

"Mexicans have a strong cultural affinity for fireworks, deeply rooted in religious festivals and national celebrations like Independence Day. The use of fireworks is a common practice during religious festivals, particularly those honoring patron saints, and especially during the Independence Day celebrations on September 15th--16th. The tradition continues with the reenactment of Father Hidalgo's cry for independence, followed by the immediate ignition of fireworks......"

And if you doubt that, stop by this part of the state for the 16th of Septembre' celebration...

Years ago, about 1986 or so, I got hooked up with a partner running a coin shop in Seattle.  Late one day, we had this chunky guy show up with a 3lb. white bucket such as was often used in those days to ship metals or just available to buyers to haul theirs out....He was a salvage operator, he said, and found this bucket buried under severeral wrecks that they'd crunched up -- discovering it as they were loading scrap onto a big semi box.  He said he had no way to trace the owner as there were no plates on the remaining vehicle and the dash was gone as well (no VIN number), so he was the legitimate owner.  We popped the lid to see an assortment of misc. silver roumds, with a few bars showing among the mess.   He said he needed cash and no paper trail and wanted $5000. for it, which was a bit high....I chiseled him down to $4600. and we put the bucket on our scale...It weighed close to the typical 1,000-oz. lots of silver, so we struck a deal and he was off like a race horse.  I set the bucket inside one of our lock-up cages for sorting the next day, and we locked up for the nigjht...The next morning after getting the shop ready for opening I started stacking the rounds in lots of 20, sorting into 5 or 6 different patterns.  As I got thru about 600 I felt a polybag buried at the bottom and pulled it out....It contained 14 Krugerrands and ten bars of Palladium!  ka-ching! Now that was one of our best surprises of that year!  He'd left no name, so the deal was done and done.

38960.....Porsche, Bufford, brings out a feeling of success, i suppose, for a lot of the newer generation....In the mid-80's I owned a 944 for a few years....I just wasn't comfortable in a Carrera so opted for the less-expensive 944 as bigger and more practical....Kept it 2+ years and got lots of thumbs-up as it was a babe magnet...But, when my first minor servicing ran $400. I started to reconsider its pracicality as that was the mid 1980's and most comparable servicing costs were maybe $150. for the 90-day mandate....Had a full-blown 40K servicing that smacked me for $850. and decided that it had been fun and a great pleasure as a sports car, but enough was enough..Funny, though, after roughly 30 months of ownership and putting nearly 45K mileage on it, I sold it for virtually a break-even price.....

Ya'all 'member this classic from earlier days ?

Was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinnertime we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And Mama hollered out the back door y'all remember to wipe your feet And then she said I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge Today Billie Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge.....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJZ_ViDADOE

ah, yes, some truly inspiring Southern songs like "Delta Dawn" and...uh...some others (no doubt)...um...like "You Picked A Fine Time To Leave me, Lucille..." ...prolly a few dozen more that made it onto the charts....back then....

I see it as a bit amusing, now that the knee-jerk UPspikes in reaction to a buncha blow-'em-ups in Mother Russia [ soon to be followed with a few retorts from Putin and some nasty smacks in Ukraine, no doubt] have occurred, now while both parties seem to be waiting for that next shoe to drop, the metals are frozen in a "holding pattern" to see what may come out of all this....pulsating in a $4 range in Gold and maybe a $.15 range in sludge....I do hope something is forthcoming that will either push these higher or let the wind out of the whole thing....

38620.....that's been happening for a great many years, near as i can tell....when we sold our home in Sammamish ten years ago, the young (30-something) Chinese guy who bought it as is [inspection declined], our realtor found out that he'd bought 4 others he'd seen that day!  Obviously, he was the representative for the tong and relatives all who were moving funds out of Canada at that time....The homes he bought, like those mentioned, sat empty for a few weeks until the various investors/relatives began to move in....Not too many folks in the position to buy -- outright -- five homes averaging over 800K each and pay for them all at once...sheesh....

38617....ALWAYS have enjoyed Cohen's "Suzanne", especially the video of he and sweet Judy Blue Eyes (Judy Collins) in their duet at a much younger age.....His "Hallelujah" was perhaps his ultimate "hit" as it has been revised and adapted for use for weddings, funerals, and other social occassions throughout the wirld not just here...As to this version by K.D. Lang, I'm not enthused as I've always been irritated by the lesbian anti-male attitudes often voiced by such 'celebs', which she has done on many occassions.....

38004....contrary to what she believes, I've no ax to grind with Tamryn...I felt, several iterations ago, that some of her exchanges with other posters were a bit 'raw' and unnecessary responses.  But, she did indeed post a goodly amount of information many of us found to be of use and/or have definite validity in regard to specific situations, often challenging the accepted internet lies....

I was a bit weary of her patting herself on the back for being one of the first to warn of certain distorted internet views...That wasn't necessary nor, in my mind, did anything to elevate her to some lofty intellect on the forum.  We knew she was good and that would have sufficed without an "I-told-you-so" added on....Anyway, I hope she feels that rejoining this blog/forum at the end of her "sentence" is worth her time, as she had a lot of knowledge to share.....

37233.....regarding "The so called media"....in the early '90's I was living over on the Olympic Penisula in a lake-based community of maybe 3000 souls, most working in the timber industry.  It was a bit of a tourist area, most of those folks staying for a day or two at the old National Forest lodge across the lake from where I lived.  But, every Friday night, a smaller resort at the north end of the lake would put on a karioki night, well attended by the locals and, quite often, tourists from down the lake at the old Lodge.  On one such occassion, a group of four Seattle television anchors strolled into the bar there and slid into the empty table beside where I was sitting.  I struck up a conversation with the head anchor for their newscasts who, after a quick round or two of cocktails had relaxed from his original tight-collared aloofness and reverted to his "good ol' boy" underlying nature [he'd grown up in some small town in Montana], ready and willing to talk about his job and those of the others with him...He admitted that, in regard to virtually any national news they were reporting, they were handed a fixed script in advance of going on air and mandated to present ONLY what was written thereon....as far as the local news, they were told to only be civil to the political party they were paid to discredit but to do or say nothing that might influence voters at the polls...."Fixed agenda"?...I asked him if he agreed to those mandates and, while he did not, he emphasized that he had a family of 3 kids, a big mortgage, and a lifestyle he enjoyed and couldn't begin to find if he were relagated to some out-of-the-way burg like Havre, Montana, or any other such place.  I'd thought of him as a pretty straight shooter, but much of what one saw on the tube was nothing but following the script...or else...

#36324....Years ago, I rolled thru that land the gummint gave the Crow as a "reservation" on which they constructed maybe a 100 or more small frame houses....Most of those that were still standing back in the early '80's had these big sections of their roofs missing -- torn out or maybe carefully removed....surrounding the openings there was a lot of black, smokey stains.....It seems they had not been shown the use of the heating systems, had no use for kitchens, so they built their new "teepees" (as they were) with a central fire and cooking area and let the smoke out through the roof holes...a great many had been burned up, of course....Stopping for gas and something cold to drink in the 95+ temperatures that day, I talked with the Indian operator of the mini-mart who explained the missing
roofs to me and other sad abuses by the Bureau of Indian Affairs....and now, some 40 years later, perhaps they are finally getting their just dues through their casino revenues?

It almost makes one melancholy thinking back to how things once were in our society....some 50+ years ago when I was treaching on the junior high level, our school system still had courses in Home Economics, basically an optional class for primarily young girls who had an interest in learning cooking and general homemaking techinques.  Our school was fairly new in that district and had been set up with the "latest and greatest" of equipment, including twenty-five high-quality German made sewing machines...All the students who took the class were encouraged to make something that they would actually wear and utilize, with judging after the completion of the projects for the nicest products.  All of the participants were encouraged to wear their skirts or blouses or jacket or slacks to classes to get the support of classmates who got to vote for those they felt were the best....awards were the top 5 finishers, so all of the participants had at least a 20% chance for an award (mostly gift
certificates for nearby clothing stores)...I had to chuckle when number 3 was one of the 3 boys who'd been in the class, a gifted kid who designed and completed a lightweight jacket with designs on the sleeves and reverse....Anyway, those were the days when Home Ec and actually useful courses were still in vogue....

Ah, the times they are a changing.....another once-favored source for linens, dress materials, ribbons, etc. etc. is packing it in:

"Joann Fabrics is closing all of its 800 stores nationwide after struggling financially, filing for bankruptcy twice in the past year, and failing to find a buyer to keep the business operating, with the assets being sold to a liquidation firm......"

It's amazing that they've hung on so long as they have, what with very few of the possible users born in the past 40 years having any interest in doing their own seamstress work much less knowing what a sewing machine was, or how to use one.....very sad....

Our local store which is located across from an office supply place I happened into today had 3 sign-holders out front and on the side of the building proclaiming 50% off on sales today.....
