Hi folks ...... I haven't posted in maybe 6 months or so, but look in occasionally. Too busy with other matters.

I wish to express my extreme condolences to Erle's family.  He was a very fine man, we exchanged quite a few emails, and I genuinely liked him .... a lot.  His subtle and sometimes acid wit, his generosity to his employees, and also his generosity to funding this forum.  Truly a man worthy of our deepest respect.

Let's keep him and his approach to life in our thoughts as we ... and I hate to use this phrase, but it fits .. as we "move forward".

RIP Erle .. you have been a great friend of all of us here.

Dangerbird ..
I missed giving you a response for the question of ...
"Define Oversold in the context of a complete global economic collapse."

A complete global economic collapse is an assumption, and while it's distinctly possible, maybe even probable, it's not necessarily any better or worse than any other possible outcome scenario's.  Many of us have been following the PM's for 2 decades or more, and I think I can recall your posts many years ago on kitko, so you would be well aware of this comment below.

We have been waiting patiently (sometimes not so patiently) since the 252 lows, so have we been wrong since then?  Define "wrong" in the context of how long we have hung around waiting for the dominoes to fall.  I can't .. and most would struggle to do so. Many of our fellow travellers have fallen by the wayside waiting for the inevitable collapse.  Not saying it can't happen, just that it's not inevitable.

Now have me hung, drawn and quartered for my blasphemy.

###
On ANOTHER day, I might choose to rant about the USD, but this is all I can muster at this moment.

All currencies float against one another, with several exceptions .. and the USD is unique among them ..

1) USD is used in transactions globally .. it IS the WORLD RESERVE CURRENCY.  It moves on an international basis, while it also acts, imho falsely, as US internal currency.  This is a complete mismatch.
2) if OIL price goes up, USD's in higher demand as USD is the currency of settlement.  Similar for other key commodities.
3) several currencies are tightly pegged to USD ..
4) several other currencies are loosely pegged to USD .. their CB's may adjust their relative position to the USD as they deem appropriate.
5) As the USD is the WORLD RESERVE CURRENCY, it allows the US to borrow any amount at will. No other nation has this prerogative.

Frus .. @ Voy down...remember that was one of the reasons we chose to go here.

Yes .. that, and the OTHER reason was many new folks could not register ..
despite many appeals to Brandon & Rudi @ voy, which mostly went unanswered.
We were stuck in limbo land with a core of maybe 30 posters.

I note recently we often have over 100 people posting or reading here ..
Quicktopic was good, but this place is probably better, now that we've learned how to use it properly.
The downside here is the cost of keeping it add-free and paying for ability to post images.

Dr John Campbell ... Omicron ..
January 4th .. 28 minutes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1avXjzr1xnc

Summary ..
Omicron infects 70x FASTER than DELTA in Bronchus
  - also infection in Mouth & back of throat

Omicron replicated 10x SLOWER in the lungs than the
original SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Omicron show less severity in a mouse model of Delta
www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.12.26.474085v2
  - less severe clinical signs
  - less weight loss
  - Lower viral loads
  - Less extensive inflammation in the lungs
  - T-Cell epitopes probably conserved

Clinical consequences of Omicron may be less severe
but higher transmissability can still place a huge burden
on health care systems.

Syrian Hampsters are also routinely used in Covid trials.
  - mimic effects in humans very closely, better than the
    studies using mice.
  - much less lung infections  (1000x)   ### ### ###
  - not as ill
  - Lower viral loads

WHO IS MOST PROTECTED FROM OMICRON ?
  - those with 3 vaccine doses
  - those with natural immunity (no vaccination)
  - those with 2 vaccine doses

OMICRON compared to DELTA and WUHAN strains
  - looking at level of virus in the lungs ..
  - were at least an order of magnitude lower (10x less)
at each time point compared to the other 2 variants
  - inflammatory effect seems to be localized in the upper
respiratory passages .. could lead to a cytokine storm
but far less likely.   Less chance of Pneumonia !

So far, this is looking very favorable ... And .. There are
no studies released showing Omicron is worse.

So, if you have Omicron, you should have a high level of
protection against a future Omicron infection .. AND .. a
good to high level of protection against Delta.

Received from knapper ...

Hey goldbugs:

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I gave our 2nd blood sampling for the University of MO covid antibody study and we received the results today.  I promised I'd let the group know results as they became available, and Tom has kindly agreed to post the results for me.

My anti-covid IgG antibodies are 71,143 units, a very high value.  A value of 1,000 is considered the threshhold for protection.  So, I'm 71-times the threshhold limit.

This measurement is circulating antibodies only.  That is, these antibodies are in my blood circulating around and ready to immediately react with any covid spike protein they encounter, attaching to it, also binding to one of my lymphocyte cells, and getting consumed and destroyed by that lymphocyte cell.  This is my first line of defense.  My second line of defense, T-cells and B-cells.....which have the memory of the spike protein and other proteins of the covid coat...take 3-4 days to gear up and make antibodies, and covid can do a lot of damage in that timeframe.  So, we humans have evolved the first-line circulating antibodies AND the second-line memory cells.  I do not have memory cell data from either of the blood draws, and I don't know why.  I've fired off a note to the principle investigator wanting to know these results 'cause it's my blood and I'm interested in this stuff.

My wife's value was 38,000-and-change.  She's well protected, too.

We are 305 days downstream (Feb 2021) from our second dose of the vaccine and 120 days downstream from our booster.  I'm not surprised our antibodies are sky-high.  These are excellent, AND expected, results.
The next samples will probably be in 4 months-or-so and I'll report them when they become available.
Hope all of you are well.  We're doing fine and should have an excellent Christmas with family.
I've seen the new site and it looks fine and dandy.

Merry Christmas to all!!!!!!!!

Silverfox .... Basel III  ..... Frustrated posted this on Dec 10th ..

anyone thinking Jan 2022 has any impact from Basel III ...then they missed me posting this some time ago

page 6

The revised standards were to take effect from 1 January 2022, with the output floor to be phased in over five years. However, in March 2020 the GHOS endorsed a set of measures to provide additional operational capacity for banks and supervisors to respond to the immediate financial stability priorities resulting from the impact of Covid-19 on the global banking system. The measures endorsed by the GHOS comprise the following changes to the implementation timeline of the outstanding Basel III standards:

• The implementation date of the Basel III standards finalised in December 2017 has been deferred by one year to 1 January 2023. The accompanying transitional arrangements for the output floor have also been extended by one year to 1 January 2028.

• The implementation date of the revised market risk framework finalised in January 2019 has been deferred by one year to 1 January 2023.

• The implementation date of the revised Pillar 3 disclosure requirements finalised in December 2018 has been deferred by one year to 1 January 2023.

Roan .. I share your concern.

People do not realise the amount of CAPITAL & ENERGY needed to maintain supplies of key minerals.
Copper, iron/steel, nickel, zinc, and many others.  Most of the big deposits have almost certainly been found, and several are at much lower grades.  This directly increases the costs of operations.

As we criss-cross the globe looking for those new resources, we prefer the safety and stability of certain .gov's and ignore others. In the latter category one could lump many African and some Sth Merkin locations. Also Indonesia (think what convulsions they put FCX through re the Freeport copper mine, in order to get some extra "free lunches" for their buddies)

And energy is under fire .. coal, oil, gas, nukular, hydro.
While the erban eggsperts pontificate about his wind and solar, and decries the use of fossil fuels cos of CO2, a VERY MINOR GAS.
Yes the future does not look sparklingly bright, as we highly civilised ants go about our daily business as inflation rips costs higher and undermines our life savings.

End of Rant.

I've just upgraded LSteve to Administrator, which also includes the Moderator function.
I'll also stay on for now in case questions arise, but LSteve assumes the primary Admin role effective immediately.

Now that the board has been operating successfully for about 3 weeks, there is little more to do as Admin. I'm sure there will be occasional calls for a change to this or that, but on the whole, the settings appear to be fine and are generally agreeable to most members.

All .. Thank You again for entrusting me and LSteve with these roles.

My wife has an ongoing serious illness which recently got worse. I can't afford the time here too much longer.

I was handing the QT forum keys over to LSteve a month or so ago when QT announced they were pulling the plug. So I have stayed on as developer of this place, and now as Admin on an ongoing but temporary basis.  I'd like to be out by year-end at the latest.

If there is anyone out there with board admin skills that would be interested in twiddling the backstage knobs, please put your hand up.

Qualifications are minimal :
* must have at least SOME sanity.
* spare time to learn the ropes, I can assist there.
* Assist LSteve as a P/T moderator .. be reasonable and not afraid to issue warnings when required.
* I believe it must be someone we are all familiar with and trust.

PS .. not one formal warning has been issued since this place opened.  Testimony to the quality of people we have here.

One credit equals one page view.

COP26 reaches a watered down agreement.

A historic climate deal reached at the COP26 climate summit has been overshadowed by a last-minute intervention from India and China, which resulted in a weakened pledge to end global reliance on coal.

Apparently India was the “sticking point” when it came to the final decision for the COP26 climate change conference, with China also supporting the last minute change.

They wanted to take the words ‘phasing out coal’ and change them to ‘phasing down coal’ .

In the video, he shows the chemical structure of both IVM and the new Pfizer drug.
One thing that left me nonplussed ... why are there 3 Fluorine attachments to the structure ?
Fluorine is a toxin.
###

and here's the answer .. from a 2013 phys.org paper ..

Fluorine is a common element added to pharmaceuticals because it can increase the drug's selectivity, enable it to dissolve in fats, and decrease the speed at which the drug is metabolized, thus allowing it more time to work. Twenty to thirty percent of drugs contain the element, including some of the most widely prescribed drugs such as well-known antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, anti-depressants, cholesterol-lowering medications, and some inhaled anesthetics.

Maybe at some stage we'll increase it to 150 or 200, but we don't want page-loading-time to suffer.
There are a LOT of knobs and buttons back-stage that can be tweaked, it'll take weeks for us to learn what they all do ..
